“Leo Super 7s” 2017

Leo super 7’s 2017, a rugby tournament organized by Leo district 306 C1 in collaboration with Leo club of University of Colombo for the first time in the leoism history. This sparkling event was held on Tuesday, 31^st of October 2017 fron 8.00 am onwards at the university of Colombo grounds. This was conducted on behalf of District 306 C1 as per requested by our Club President Leo Tharindu Jayasinghe. Ultimately we received this rare opportunity as our Club is highly potential to host such major projects and bear massive responsibilities.

Along with the rugby tournament we came up with an idea to bring much more attention of the public over this event. We brought up the opportunity for one rugby player to be awarded as the “ The Most Popular Rugby Player of Leo Super 7s 2017” . The most popular rugby player contest was open for all the state universities across the country. The opportunity to apply for the contest was given only to two candidates from each university. The details of application was sent via letters. Along with these a dedicated poll system was developed with the help of information and technology directors.

Meanwhile after Mobitel Sri Lanka Telecom was sincerely ready to sponsor this contest, we converted the contest to a new era renaming it as “ The Most Popular Mobitel Rugby Player of Leo Super 7s 2017”. The top five player who so far had the highest votes were taken to the newest polling system to continue the contest.

There were five universities who participated for the event out of nine invited universities. The tournament began after the arrival of chief guest Lion Rupa Dheerasigha MJF MAF JP, Diastrict Governor, Lion District 306 C1 and Guest of honor Leo Pasindu Bhanuka Premarathna, District President, leo District 306 C1. Thereupon the registration of teams proceed around 8.30am. The matches started around 10.00am and many exciting matches were played till the evening. The final match, SLIIT University vs. University of Moratuwa started around 3.00pm and ultimate results were as follows,

ü  Cup Champions- SLIIT

ü  Cup Runners-up-University of Moratuwa

ü  Plate Champions-University of Sabaragamuwa

ü  Plate Runners-up-University of Kelaniya

The winning teams and Most Popular Mobitel Rugby Player Pasindu Hewagamage of University of Moratuwa were awarded by chief guest Lion Rupa Dheerasigha MJF MAF JP, Diastrict Governor, Lion District 306 C1 at the award ceremony held at the end of the event.

Afterwards there was a DJ entertainment for all the people who were present there.

Leo Super 7’s was a major project conducted by Leo District 306 C1 which in this year we got the opportunity of conducting it on behalf of them. We were able to learn how to implement a project strategically, improved lot of leadership skills and understood the power of teamwork throughout this project. To make this event a success as planned we received valuable contribution of our club members which helped us to fulfill the objective of promoting rugby in the community and among many university scholars which benefitted them to exhibit their sport abilities to the world.
