“SarthakathwayePrarthanawa”

“SarthakathwayePrarthanawa”

"Wishing the success!!!"
“Prarthana” was the very first event conducted by the UOCFMFLEO club. The main objective was getting the bless from all the religions to the newly elected board of head and themembers and further wishing the success of the projects and events that club is decided to do in this new Leostic year. Under the instruction of newly elected president Leo Tharindu Jayasinghe, club members selected Leo Samudrika Senarathna as the head of the “Prarthana” organizing committee followed by other committee members .The Organizing committee decided to visit to all the religious places and participate in various religious activities by covering all the religions as UOC FMF LEO club is the only university LEO club in the 306 C1 district  and we have huge membership base with the members who are coming from different cultures, religions and ethnic groups. Therefore, this event became meaningful and colorful because of this multicultural background of the club and that’s why "Prathana" is not an ordinary religious event. On the 9th of August 2017 morning, all the members went to the kovil Sri Kailawasanthan Swami Dewasthan. After doing the Hindu customs, the newly elected board and the members were blessed by the swami. This Hindu function arranged and coordinated by the Tamil members of our Club Leo Kemaln and Leo Lajeevan.  The blessing in the kovil was a new experience for most of our members and all were very happy as it was a remarkable memory in our lives. The experience that they were gained in the Kovil would be important to them someday. The Organizing committee expected another object from this event to create an opportunity to get to know about other`s cultural values as well.

Our next place was Infant Jesus Shrine, Colombo 02.  In that Church, we participated in prays and after that father blessed all of us and gave lot of valuable opinions and advices to us how to use this valuable youth life for the well being of the Society. While he was sharing his own memories in the university life, he gave alot of advices to our lives. The coordination of this Church visit was done by Leo Imesh and Leo Amoda.

Thirdly we went to Bambalapitiya Mosque. Leo Rushdan coordinated us in the Mosque. When we entered to the mosque the head maulawi warmly welcomed us. Then heprays with us for our success. At the mosque maulawi gave lot of valuable advices for us about how to work as a team and the value of the brotherhood. Furtherhe explained the strength of the team and how to keep it and increase it

According to our agenda the last place we decide to visit was Gangarama Temple to have a Bodhi Puja, for this event most of our current, past and district members were participated and they contributed lot of things to make this event success. The high level of participation from the club members increases the value of the event. Initially we decided to do this event simply but with the participation of high number of members, it became a big event. The Bodhi puja was completed successfully. Then the Ven. Thero blessed for us and wished us for the success of the future projects and then preached us the value of doing good things to the community and how it gets back to our lives. At last Ven. Thero mentioned that the society really need the unity of the good peoples because most of the time good people do not do that and that is the problem of the current world. And before we leave the temple the past district President Leo Kasun Heeraluarachi addressed all the members and it was good inspiration for us.

First we need to thank for all the monks and priests who blessed for us and organizing committee did their work excellent. Finally, we should thank for all the board head members and the all the club members who participated for this event and helped the organizing committee to make this event success.
The event Prarthana was successfully completed with blessings from all the four religions and we gained lot of things than we expected. Especially the advices are priceless and those are showed us, how to approach to our ultimate goal of serve to the community by think differently and also to find new paths for develop the community. Not only that the strength of us and the potential of club members as a youth club is a very good sign for a better future. We think that we are really blessed from this event and by wishing the success in this way will not be a miracle it will be happen in real.

“රුහිරු_ජිවිතයක් උදෙසා”

“රුහිරු_ජිවිතයක් උදෙසා”

“රුහිරු_ජිවිතයක් උදෙසා” was the first blood donation campaign organized by the Leo Club of University of Colombo which was successfully held on 31st of March 2017. The campaign was conducted in the faculty premises of University of Colombo. The specific objective of arranging a blood donation campaign was to create a platform to promote voluntary blood donation and to inculcate public awareness that blood donation is a humanitarian act.

Blood is a crucial element for the survival of each and every living being. By 2013, Sri Lanka has achieved a remarkable success in reaching a self-sufficient blood supply, but over the past few years the pattern has been changed. We notified that currently the National Blood Transfusion Service is demanding for more healthy blood as there is a noticeable boom in number of patients.

As it was specifically mentioned as “Healthy Blood”, we chose university students as the niche to conduct the blood donation campaign. Ultimately it led as an opportunity for many university students to donate blood voluntarily for altruistic reasons and without any monetary rewards. It was reported that over 112 donors have accorded their precious blood to save one’s life while approximately 78 of them were first time contributors.

The project was implemented after looking over the reservation dates at National Blood transfusion service we were able to secure 31st of March 2017 to conduct the campaign at our faculty premises.

Communication campaign was one of the major tasks out of the activities. As our anticipated target was 100 donors, it was crucial to make public aware regarding the campaign. Our communication campaign was accompanied with;
  • Posters and banners.
  • Created an event on Facebook.
  • Facebook and Instagram flyers. 
  • Short message service of FMF and 
  • Batch and departmental vies project awareness programmes.
Truly the target of 100 donors was accomplished due to relying on wider range of communicating strategies.

As this was the first blood donation campaign organized by the Leo Club of University of Colombo, we decided to gift a custom-made souvenir to each donor to show gratitude over their kindness to save a life. It was gifted with a customized red colour fingerprint of the donor on it.

A hygienic environment was a pivotal factor to conduct a blood donation campaign. Therefore we reserved the evening of 30th of March 2017 to clean the cafeteria as per the prior plans. The cafeteria floor was entirely scoured and the tables were arranged as necessary for the next day.

Event was started with the arrival of the senior lecturer Dr. Rajistha Alwis and the campaign were comprised with two doctors and fourteen staff members. We noticed that there was a special attentiveness among the young crowd to donate blood.   At the end of the campaign, data was reported as follows,
  • Number of donors : 112
  • Number of first time donors : 78
  • Number of beneficiaries : 112 * 3 = 336 patients

Every donor was served with a glass of king coconut (Glucose, Jeewani and Nestamalt were available as alternatives too) prior to donation of blood and a packet of milk, a piece of cake and a tea bun after donation.

“රුහිරු_ජිවිතයක් උදෙසා” campaign was an extreme success because of the immense support, great effort and courage of everyone. It was proud to communicate that we were able to contribute to secure approximately three hundred lives through our hardest effort. Ultimately “රුහිරු_ජිවිතයක් උදෙසා” is not a termination but adjourned for a moment to see a new phase in the following year too.

Blood donation campaign was an unconventional experience for many participants. This event let us face many challenge successfully. Some of the challenges were  
  • Cleaning the canteen.
  • Make sure to serve donors with the appropriate refreshments.
  • Properly contemplate the donors prior and after donation.
  • Dealing with contingency situations like donors get collapse/faint unexpectedly. 
  • Handling souvenirs and gift them to donors. 
  • Respond to opinions of the lecturers.
These challenges were accepted energetically by our team and finally directed the event to the success. Therefore further we hope to purse “රුහිරු_ජිවිතයක් උදෙසා” in new phases for the upcoming years with the intention of contributing to enlighten someone’s life.
